Workplace Success Stories

Alsco

We all overcome challenges in our lives, but some of us have far stronger, and more powerful, challenges to overcome. Tony Nava has such barriers. As a young man, Tony was a crew leader for a well known landscaping firm. He was a hard worker and climbed his way from the bottom up to a higher position where he was well known and liked by superiors and clients alike. Then Tony had a car accident. Of the five people in the car Tony was the only one that did not walk to school the next day. In fact he no longer walks. Despite his confinement to a wheelchair Tony’s indomitable spirit never died. He is the founder and coach of Santa Rosa’s Blazers. The Blazers is made up of individuals with disabilities and is currently ranked fifth in the nation.

As a bicycle enthusiast, Tony built his own hand cycle and is in the process of forming a bicycle team comprising of individuals with disabilities. Despite all these accomplishments Tony wanted more. He loved to work and missed it. Tony wanted to work with his hands and despite many tempting office jobs he was determined to find a job where he could be physically active; not an easy job to find for a man in a wheelchair. Enter Alsco, a textile services company. The General Manager Dennie Bunch has worked his way up from having a “broom in a closet” to his current position. He was often looking for driven, dedicated, employees but had difficulty finding dependable employees. West County Community Services (WCCS) put these two together, and now Tony has a job where he gets to be physical and is appreciated, and Dennie has a loyal and hard working employee who has shown his worth time and time again. In fact, Dennie is considering promoting Tony because of his accomplishments, drive and work ethic. WCCS is proud to have these two individuals, employee and employer, as satisfied customers and happy coworkers.

Timber Cove Inn

WCCS' employment programs have been instrumental in pairing local businesses with loyal and hard working employees. Special thanks goes out to Timber Cove Inn, and their employee Ben Feige, who have kindly provided us with these pictures and a testimonial on the benefits and effectiveness of our programs. Ben, with the assistance of WCCS staff learned to write a resume, cover letter and develop his interviewing skills. His hard work paid off! He was hired by Timber Cove Inn.
